5 Outcomes to Consider for your Culture Initiatives

November 14, 2022

Have you ever wondered why some culture initiatives don’t work?

Have you ever experienced a culture transformation program start strong, only for it to fizzle out and have the organization revert back to old ways?

When these initiatives fail, it’s because they aren’t targeting the right outcomes. For us, culture isn’t all fluff. It must be measurable so that we’ll know if our culture is actually transforming. In our experience of invigorating cultures, we have found that culture transformation has 5 key outcomes.

Outcome # 1: Culture brings Strategic Clarity

Peter Drucker famously said “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” By that, he meant that no matter how robust and detailed your strategic plan is, without the right culture, then the organization has little to no chance for the strategy to be executed well.

An organization’s culture greatly impacts how strategy is formed, communicated, and executed. Having the right culture brings strategic clarity across all levels. It brings our strategy to life. With this outcome in mind, we can take a look at who forms the strategies, what’s in our strategic plans, how clear are our strategies for all, and how well have we been executing these given our timelines. These are just some of the sample questions that we design metrics for when we journey with our clients towards invigorating their cultures.

Outcome # 2: Culture engages our people

Engaged employees are the key drivers for your organization. Perhaps the most common measure of culture initiatives are the employee engagement scores. The challenge now is to look beyond the usual satisfaction ratings and go deeper towards measuring loyalty, motivation, and empowerment.

It invites us to examine our processes, systems, structures vis-á-vis the overall employee journey – from recruitment, talent development, employee retention, and even employee exits. Initiatives that are strongly anchored on people engagement outcomes will most likely see improvements in employee morale, resilience, agility, accountability and overall performance.

Outcome # 3: Culture fuels innovation

An effective culture fuels learning, innovation, and change. Designing your culture initiatives aligned with key innovation metrics will also be key to your success. With the fast pace of change in internal and external environments, the ability of our people, process, and systems to adapt and thrive is critical.

Organizations must ensure that there are measures for different levels of learning, check if feedback mechanisms are in place and are utilized, assess if learning comes in the flow of work, review rewards and recognition, evaluate one’s relationships with risk and mistakes. By ensuring a holistic approach to innovation metrics, organizations can now design interventions that are beyond the usual formal learning environments.

Outcome # 4: Culture increases brand love

Your culture will be felt by your customers and external stakeholders. It has been established that culture increases employee loyalty and engagement. And we know that employee satisfaction correlates with customer satisfaction. What culture initiatives often fail to measure is how they impact the customer experience.

Some things to look at in relation to this outcome are customer perceptions, our reputation among job seekers, customer satisfaction ratings and feedback, turnaround times, customer service process improvements and innovations.

Outcome # 5: Culture drives business value

The fifth and last outcome is that culture drives business value. In short, it increases revenues, profit, and overall business performance. Your invigorated culture is a competitive advantage. That’s why we suggest going beyond the usual ‘feel-good’ culture initiatives to target hard outcomes for the organization. At the end of the day, is your culture driving growth?

It is important to note that business value as an outcome for culture initiatives cannot stand alone. To achieve this, not only do organizations need to establish clear connections between their interventions and business performance; they also need to be improving all the 4 other outcomes simultaneously.

Here at Management Strategies, we believe that Culture Powers Performance, and to achieve these, culture initiatives must be anchored on critical outcomes – strategy, people, innovation, brand love, and growth.
