How Purpose Drives Strategy

July 1, 2022

NOTE: This is the second article in a three-part series on Organizational Purpose: How purpose drives 1) Culture, 2) Strategy, and 3) Teams.

Welcome to the second part of our Purpose Series!

Is your organization’s strategy running on empty when it comes to Purpose?

Imagine yourself steering the wheel of your business with a very long stretch of road ahead. With you are passengers–fellow navigators–who are more than willing to take the driver’s seat at any point in your journey.

Are you confident that they have the same commitment to the Strategy you all agreed to when you left your Point A? Are they skilled drivers whose life you can depend on when you’re behind the wheel?

Most importantly, are you sharing the same Purpose, which, in this case, is to reach your Point B without losing sight of the good you can do for everyone involved in this trip?

This article is about evaluating your organization’s purposive use of Purpose to create powerful Strategies.

Here are some thoughts to fuel up your strategy with Purpose.

We already know that Purpose is about being good to do good for everyone in and out of your organization. That Purpose drives the Individual and Culture to consistently deliver on our promise to create a better life for everyone.

The Forbes article “The Power Of Purpose: The Business Case For Purpose (All The Data You Were Looking For Pt 1) states that purpose provides strategic clarity. A Harvard Business Review article mentions that purpose helps redefine the playing field that opens up new growth opportunities. Other long-term growth benefits include reshaping the value proposition, broadening the mission, creating a holistic value proposition, and delivering lifetime benefits to customers.

Another example is Accenture Strategy’s ‘From Me to We: The Rise of the Purpose-Led Brand.’ Their most recent global survey of nearly 30,000 consumers found that 62% of customers want “companies to take a stand on current and broadly relevant issues like sustainability, transparency or fair employment practices.”

But here’s where it gets tricky: When Purpose has been articulated and is firmly ingrained in your business, it becomes even more powerful and visible when everyone is on board. The question is: Is everyone truly on board?

The HR Daily Advisor’s article The “Purpose-Driven” is Not Enough” poses a question for consideration: Is your organization Purpose-driven or Purpose-enabled?

A Purpose-Driven Organization (PDO) or Purpose-Enabled Organization (PEO)?

The Bluepoint Leadership article, “Purpose Driven Isn’t Enough,” mentions that the notion of building, becoming, or realizing you already are part of a purpose-driven organization (PDO) is a strategic basis for employees, and your stakeholders, and the world.

The article also mentions the drive for purpose is the opposite of the traditional view of employee motivation and engagement. This thinking is based on working hard to achieve extrinsic rewards, such as performance appraisals or beating the competition.

The PDO idea is centered on a higher purpose and mission to do their best work. This is usually something bigger than oneself. It is an authentic source of motivation and long-term satisfaction, ultimately leading to a highly fulfilling life.

According to the article, however, this is not enough.

It can fail when an organization’s capabilities don’t match its aspirations.

The key to long-term sustained success for organizations is to move beyond purpose-driven and become purpose-enabled.

Here’s the difference:

Purpose-driven is built on belief, while purpose-enabled is built on capability. Essentially, you know where you’re going and have the skills to get there.

PEOs consistently deliver on their ambitious goals. The article describes them as the “architects and stewards of organizational systems which support the achievement of purpose.”

Where do you think Strategy becomes more transparent and purposeful for your business?

May the Purpose be with you. Live long and Purposeful.
